GreenGrid Modular Green Roof System

GreenGrid Modular Green Roof System in Maine

Green roofs have been popular in Europe since the 1970's. Today, Europeans have over 100 million square feet of planted roofs. Many of these systems are built-in-place on the roof, making them complex and expensive to install. Faced with soaring energy costs and stormwater management requirements, U.S. building designers and owners are turning to the GreenGrid® modular green roof system - the premier green roof system for high performance buildings.

The GreenGrid® modular green roof system is a cost competitive alternative to traditional built-in-place green roofs. A GreenGrid® green roof is composed of a series of preplanted modules made of recycled plastics that can easily be placed directly on a roof or other structure with sufficient structural capacity. The system meets the needs and requirements of industrial/commercial, government, institutional, and residential buildings.

GreenGrid® systems provide many features that no other green roof system offers:

  • Modules - Patented GreenGrid® modules are composed of 100% post-industrial, recycled, high molecular weight polyethylene. The modules come in a variety of sizes and are available in three depths. The Ultra Extensive (2.5-inch depth) modules - supporting only sedum species - weigh only 11-13 pounds per square foot (wet). The Extensive (4-inch depth) modules - supporting shallow rooting grass, sedum, and wildflower species - weigh approximately 18-22 pounds per square foot (wet). The Intensive (8-inch depth) modules - supporting a large variety of ornamental perennials and shrubs - weigh approximately 35+ pounds per square foot (wet).
  • Growing Media - GreenGrid® is a proprietary mixture of organic and inorganic material, formulated on the basis of years of research and field testing by soil scientists and horticulture experts.
  • Preplanted Vegetation - GreenGrid® modules arrive at the jobsite preplanted and ready for installation on the roof. Plants can be selected by GreenGrid® or specified by others.
  • Drip Irrigation Systems - The optional drip irrigation system (typically selected for Intensive systems) is designed for even watering of the plants. For many geographic areas/climates plants can be selected to withstand drought conditions.
  • Ecoballast® - Filled with aggregate, Ecoballast® provides a modular roof ballast with pre-determined water retention capability.
  • Edge Treatments - Wood, recycled composite wood, metal, or other specialty materials (in various colors and designs) can be included as part of the GreenGrid® system design.
  • Optional Features - Pavers made from recycled rubber, walkways, water ponds, outdoor furniture, and planter boxes can be incorporated into the GreenGrid® system.
